The debate over Brock Purdy’s place among the NFL’s top quarterbacks refuses to cool off, and Fred Warner isn’t interested in playing the middle.

San Francisco’s 2025 season never fully found its footing, as injuries piled up across the roster and ultimately derailed any postseason hopes.
Purdy wasn’t immune to the chaos, missing time with a turf toe injury, but Warner believes the quarterback’s impact went far beyond box scores or circumstances.
Adams challenged Warner by bringing up Chargers QB Justin Herbert, a quarterback Warner has openly admired for years.
While the linebacker acknowledged Herbert’s talent, he didn’t hesitate when it came time to choose. “Justin Herbert’s a great quarterback, but he’s not Brock Purdy,” Warner said. “Brock Purdy’s the best. I see it every single day.”

That’s notable praise coming from an All-Pro defender who regularly studies the league’s top passers.
Warner has spoken glowingly about Herbert in the past, acknowledging his arm talent and presence. But when pressed by Adams to choose, Warner didn’t budge.
For Warner, the difference between Purdy and Herbert starts with how the game slows down behind center.
“I think Brock processes the game at a different level than everybody,” Warner said. “Pre-snap, post-snap, knowing exactly where the ball needs to go, that’s what separates him.”
Since Purdy entered the league in 2022, the numbers help explain why Warner feels so strongly.

Over that span, Purdy has been among the NFL’s most efficient passers, consistently ranking near the top in passer rating, yards per attempt, and touchdown-to-interception ratio.
He’s also piled up wins at a remarkable rate, guiding the 49ers to double-digit victories in multiple seasons despite entering the league as the final pick of the draft.
Herbert, meanwhile, has produced gaudier volume stats. Since 2022, the Chargers quarterback has thrown for more total yards and touchdowns, often asked to carry a heavier offensive load.
However, that production has come with more interceptions and fewer wins, as Los Angeles has struggled to find consistency around him.

Purdy’s completion percentage and passer rating during that stretch outpace Herbert’s, while Herbert leads in raw passing yards.
Even in 2025, with San Francisco short-handed, Purdy showed his value upon returning from injury, finishing the season with 2,167 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven wins in nine starts.
Warner’s belief goes beyond present-day rankings. He sees a future filled with hardware.
“It’s only a matter of time before he’s got not only a Super Bowl trophy, but an MVP trophy,” Warner said.
The league can keep debating. Inside the 49ers’ locker room, the verdict is already in, and Brock Purdy is the standard.
