KOLKATA: A routine pre-dawn naka check under heightened poll surveillance led to seizure of unaccounted for cash worth Rs 25 lakh from an app cab passenger near City Centre 2 in New Town on Friday. According to cops, the operation was conducted by the flying squad team of Bidhannagar Police as part of ongoing enforcement measures during the Model Code of Conduct. The vehicle was intercepted during a routine check, and a search led to recovery of bundles of cash from a passenger identified as Thakor Suraji Abhesang.Officers said the man was unable to produce any valid documentation to justify source or intended use of the money, after which he was detained for questioning and the cash was seized.Under EC guidelines, carrying cash above Rs 50,000 during election period can invite scrutiny. Individuals are required to furnish supporting documents like bank slips or passbook entries, PAN or ID proof, invoices where applicable, and a written explanation detailing the purpose. Any seizure exceeding Rs 10 lakh is reported to I-T dept.
