Video of big rig crash on I-5 highlights need for safe distance, defensive driving

Date:

A seemingly minor object in the roadway can turn into a serious crash in a matter of seconds, underscoring the importance of staying alert behind the wheel.

A video of a recent collision shows how quickly a roadway hazard can escalate into a dangerous situation.

The dashcam video captured by a big rig shows the big rig in the slow lane as a car merges onto the highway on the right.

There is also a small SUV that is passing the truck in the fast lane.

The SUV clipped some debris in the roadway, which may have come from two vehicles stopped in the center median.

As the vehicles approached the stopped cars, one of them suddenly pulled out into traffic, right in front of the oncoming SUV, which collided with the vehicle and rolled onto its side.

The driver of the big rig did not have time to react and crashed into the back of the out-of-control SUV, pushing it down some distance down the highway until it rolled again and came to a stop.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the crash.

Traffic safety guidance emphasizes scanning far ahead — not just the vehicle in front — and maintaining a safe following distance to allow time and space to react.

Drivers are also urged to avoid sudden lane changes when possible and to report roadway hazards immediately.
