Actor Payal Chengappa is stepping into a striking new phase of her career with her upcoming web series Jerax, and in an exclusive interaction with ETimes, she reveals why this project felt like an immediate “yes.” At the heart of her decision was the complexity of the character. “The one element in this script that made me say ‘yes’ immediately was the depth and complexity of my character, Jerax. She’s not just a lead; she’s a person with layers, flaws, and a very strong sense of self,” Payal shares. The role marks a clear departure from her previous screen image. Known for relatable portrayals, the actor admits that Jerax challenges perceptions. “This character definitely moves away from the ‘girl next door’ image. Jerax is bold, sometimes unpredictable, and she has an edge I haven’t explored before,” she says, adding that the character’s blend of vulnerability and strength is what will resonate most with viewers.
A shift towards realism in OTT
With Jerax marking her digital debut, Payal acknowledges the shift in acting style required for OTT platforms. “OTT demands more realism. I had to unlearn some of the more theatrical habits from my earlier work to bring a more grounded and subtle performance,” she explains. One particular scene pushed her emotional boundaries as an actor. “There’s a moment where Jerax confronts her past trauma. It left me feeling completely vulnerable. It was emotionally taxing but also very liberating,” she recalls.
Navigating struggles and rejection
Reflecting on her journey, Payal speaks candidly about starting out without industry backing. “Getting opportunities was harder initially, and even now, being taken seriously is a constant process. You have to keep proving yourself,” she says. Rejection, she adds, has been a crucial teacher. “It taught me resilience. A ‘no’ isn’t about your worth, it’s often about timing or fit. That understanding helped me stay focused and keep working.” She also admits to early career missteps. “I used to say ‘yes’ to everything, trying to please everyone. Now, I’m more selective about the stories I want to tell.”
Finding belonging and staying authentic
Payal recalls a defining moment when she truly felt she belonged in the industry. “It was when I saw the final cut of my first major project and realized the impact a performance can have. That was very grounding.” Her philosophy today is rooted in authenticity and growth. “Struggle is important, but it’s not about hardship alone, it’s about how you use those experiences to understand human emotions. It’s about empathy,” she says. She emphasizes the importance of protecting her individuality. “I stay true to my roots and I’m not afraid to say ‘no’ to typecast roles. I want to keep surprising both myself and the audience.”
A personal side beyond the spotlight
Away from the camera, Payal describes herself as someone who values simplicity. “I love quiet moments, I’m deeply connected to my family, and I’m always curious about the world,” she shares.
A milestone moment
Calling Jerax a significant milestone, the actor says the project feels both validating and demanding. “Making my web series debut with such a big platform and banner is incredible. It comes with responsibility, but it also feels like a recognition of the work I’ve put in so far.” With a layered character, a shift in performance style, and a strong personal conviction guiding her choices, Payal Chengappa’s Jerax promises to showcase a new, compelling dimension of the actor.
