“Be Prepared” City officials warn public of heavy rainfall and potential flooding | Hawaii News Now | HNN

Date:

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – City officials held a press conference today warning the public of the upcoming storm that is expected to hit the state later this week. Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the city will activate its Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday.

The ground is still saturated from the previous two Kona low storms, and dam levels remain higher than normal. The city plans to send first responders and other personnel to areas known to be vulnerable to flooding. Blangiardi said emergency sirens will sound if conditions become dangerous.

The city has already started to clear streams and waterways to reduce the risk of flooding. Crews will also closely monitor water levels as heavy rain moves in on Wednesday.

Blangiardi urged residents to prepare now in case evacuations become necessary. He also reminded the public to sign up for safety alerts through the HNL ALERT app.
