Elon Musk gives update on Neuralink; says: Neuralink is restoring ..

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has now shred an update on its brain-computer interface Neuralink. Musk has revealed that Neuralink is now capable of restoring speech by translation brain activity into audible words. Musk shared the update via a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). “Neuralink is restoring speech to those who have lost the ability to speak,” wrote Musk. The post also highlighted Neuralink’s latest clinical trial progress, marks a major milestone in the company’s mission to help patients with severe disabilities regain communication abilities.

Neuralink can now restore speech via the brain chip

Neuralink shared a post on X along with a video demonstrating the update. The video shared shows Kenneth Shock, an ALS patient who received Neuralink’s N1 implant earlier this year. For those unaware, ALS takes away the ability to walk and talk from the patient, but Shock was able to communicate again with the help of the Neuralink implant. Neuralink’s software decodes phonemes which is the smallest unit of sound from brain signals and then assemblies them into words, and reproduces them in the patient’s original voices.“ALS has gradually taken away Kenneth’s ability to speak. Through Neuralink’s VOICE clinical trial, he’s exploring how a brain-computer interface designed to translate thought to speech could help restore autonomy in his daily life,” wrote the company.

How Neuralink’s new feature works

The system interprets the neural activity which is linked to speech and then coverts it into text, which is then spoken aloud by a computer system. While the whole process takes a few moments to decode the words, but Neuralink aims to achieve real-time translation of brain signals into voice, making communication seamless for patients.On X, Musk emphasised that Neuralink is “restoring speech and communication”, underscoring that the technology is already being tested in real-world scenarios. He described the development as a step toward enabling patients to “talk with their minds.”Despite this latest achievement, Neuralink still faces challenges including egulatory approval, long-term safety testing, and ethical concerns around neural data privacy. The technology remains in clinical trials, meaning widespread availability is still years away.
