'Jana Nayagan' release delayed as CBFC refers Thalapathy Vijay starrer to Election Commission - Reports
Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ release is postponed as the CBFC has referred the political thriller to the Election Commission. Concerns over the film’s sensitive dialogues and political imagery potentially influencing voters during the ongoing election cycle have led to this unprecedented move. The industry now anticipates a post-election release, possibly in May or June 2026.

The wait for Thalapathy Vijay’s final cinematic outing, ‘Jana Nayagan’, has been extended as the CBFC reportedly recommends an unprecedented review by the Election Commission. Directed by H. Vinoth, the political thriller was initially set for a January 9, 2026, release but has been mired in a months-long standoff over its sensitive dialogues and political imagery. Following the latest screening on March 17, officials expressed concerns that the film’s content could influence voters during the current election cycle in Tamil Nadu. With Anirudh Ravichander’s music already topping charts and a star-studded cast including Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol, the industry is now bracing for a potential post-election release, possibly in May or June 2026.

Re-censor review completed; EC decision awaited

According to Puthiya Thalaimurai, the re-censor review of the film was finally held in Mumbai on March 17 after earlier delays. A special panel, including officials from Tamil Nadu, watched the film and checked whether controversial scenes had been removed. Since election rules are currently in force in Tamil Nadu, the situation has become sensitive. Reports suggest the film contains political scenes and dialogues, which has made the review process stricter.

CBFC recommends Election Commission review

In a major development, the censor board has reportedly recommended that the film be reviewed by the Election Commission before release. This is because of the political content in the film and Vijay’s active involvement in politics. The board believes that the final decision on the film’s release should be taken by the Election Commission, considering the current election environment. This suggestion created another difficulty for the movie’s release.

Political content triggers fresh delay concerns

The makers had earlier approached the court over the delay, but later withdrew the case and sent the film for re-review. Though it was anticipated that the censor certificate would be granted a few days after the latest screening, things took a turn when the recent screening recommended that the Election Commission be consulted. Because of the elections and the political content of the film, ‘Jana Nayagan’ will be delayed, and fans will have to wait to know more about its release.
