In a surprising move, The Washington Post has cut a large part of its editorial staff, including reporters and editors covering foreign news. One of the biggest names affected is Pranshu Verma, who has been leading the newspaper’s New Delhi bureau.

A difficult day for Pranshu Verma

Sharing the news on X, Verma said, “Heartbroken to share I’ve been laid off from The Washington Post. Gutted for so many of my talented friends who are also gone. It was a privilege to work here for the past four years. Serving as the paper’s New Delhi bureau chief was an honor.”His words reflect both personal sadness and the impact on many other journalists. The layoffs have affected The Post’s international coverage heavily, including senior reporters like Ishaan Tharoor, a columnist and son of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, as per online media reports.

Who is Pranshu Verma

Pranshu Verma is an experienced journalist who has reported on politics, technology, and international affairs.>He completed a Bachelor of Science in finance from the University of Delaware and later earned a Master of Science in journalism from Columbia University, according to his LinkedIn profile.>He started his journalism career at The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2019 as an investigative reporting fellow.>According to his profile, he then joined The New York Times in Washington, DC, reporting on the State Department, transportation, and economic sanctions as a David Rosenbaum Fellow.>In 2021, he worked as a technology reporter at Boston Globe Media.>Verma joined The Washington Post in March 2022 as a technology reporter in Washington, DC, and by May 2025, he became the New Delhi bureau chief. In this role, he led coverage of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

Recognition in journalism

Verma’s work has earned several honors:>He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 2024.>According to a report by NDTV, he received the Overseas Press Club Hal Boyle Citation.>He also earned an honorable mention from the Society of Publishers in Asia.>Verma is a member of the South Asian Journalists Association and Investigative Reporters and Editors.
