Some Apple iPhone users begin receiving payouts from million Siri privacy settlement

iPhone users in the United States have started receiving payments from Apple’s USD 95 million settlement linked to a class action lawsuit over Siri privacy. The payouts began this week, according to multiple users who reported receiving direct deposits. The settlement relates to claims that Apple’s Siri voice assistant recorded conversations without user intent. Apple agreed to settle the case last year, while denying any wrongdoing. Apple accepted users’ claims in mid-2025. As per a 9to5Mac report, eligible users who filed on time are now seeing funds deposited into their bank accounts or payment apps. Others who chose alternative payment options are still waiting to receive their settlement amounts.

Siri privacy settlement: How it settlement works and who is eligible

The lawsuit dates back to concerns raised in 2019 about unintended Siri activations. To qualify for the settlement, users had to own at least one Siri-enabled Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. They also needed to claim that Siri activated without their intent during that period.

Each claimant was allowed to submit claims for up to five devices. While the total settlement amount was USD 95 million, the final payout per device is lower than earlier estimates. Initial projections suggested users could receive up to USD 20 per device, with a maximum payout of USD 100. However, settlement administrators later calculated that actual payments would be about USD 8.02 per device, with a maximum of USD 40.10 for users who claimed the full five devices.Users who selected direct deposit have begun receiving payments. Those who opted for prepaid gift cards or paper checks are expected to receive them by email or mail. Settlement administrators have advised users to check spam folders and physical mailboxes.

Background of Siri privacy lawsuit

The case began after a 2019 report by The Guardian revealed that Apple contractors reviewing Siri recordings for quality control could hear private conversations. Apple said that fewer than one percent of Siri interactions were reviewed and that recordings were not linked to user identities.Apple later changed its policies, requiring users to opt in to Siri recording reviews and ending the use of outside contractors for this work. The lawsuit focused mainly on claims that Siri could activate by mistake, leading to recordings of conversations users did not intend to share.Apple has said that Siri recordings were never used for advertising and were not tied to Apple accounts. The company settled the case to move forward while continuing to deny the allegations.
