The New York Yankees have seen plenty of incredible players come through their organization in their franchise’s long history, and some have been more special than others.
Sometimes, even if a player isn’t an All-Star, they wind up as a fan favorite for a few different reasons. And one of those former Yankees fan favorites made a big announcement.
As Gio Urshela shared on his Instagram page, he has retired from baseball and the Major Leagues after 10 seasons, three of which he spent with the Yankees.

Urshela on Instagram shared a long message for fans, his family and all those he met through his baseball journey, accompanied by the simple message of “Siempre Agradecido,” or “Forever Grateful.”
Urshela played in Major League Baseball for 10 seasons, beginning in 2015 with the Cleveland Guardians, where he played for two seasons before a 2018 stint with the Toronto Blue Jays for one year.
Then starting in 2019 and through the 2021 season, Urshela found a home with the Yankees, producing 6.4 bWAR across 291 games with 296 hits, 63 doubles, 41 homers, 153 RBIs, a .292 average and an .815 OPS.

He was a great player for the Yankees, and he even posted some decent numbers in the postseason, with a .636 OPS in 17 playoff games, including two homers and a .740 OPS in 2019.
He then rounded out his MLB career with a season with the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves and a final year with the Athletics in 2025.
After 851 games and 10 seasons, Urshela is retiring from MLB at 34 years old, as the former Yankees fan favorite is stepping away from baseball after a long time in the league with some solid production, mainly with the Yankees.
