Shillong: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Thursday flagged off a new fleet of police vehicles at the Police Officers’ Mess, Golflink, Shillong, aimed at strengthening mobility, operational preparedness and public service delivery of the Meghalaya Police.The police department has procured 95 vehicles at a cost of about ₹30 crore. Of these, 79 were acquired through funds extended by the Government of India under the Central Assistance to State Police Scheme.The fleet includes truck and bus troop carriers and ‘Yodha’ vehicles for the CID, intended to enhance operational efficiency, mobility and emergency response capabilities across the state.Sangma said law and order remains central to governance and reiterated the govt’s commitment to strengthening the police force through investments and reforms. Referring to reforms such as the Police Reserve Fund, he said, “Through these reforms, infrastructure that was once in a dilapidated condition is now being renovated and upgraded. More importantly, authority and responsibility have been delegated to SPs and unit commanders, ensuring faster and more effective execution”.He also cited the recruitment of over 3,000 personnel into long-vacant posts as part of efforts to bolster manpower and support for policing.The chief minister said the govt is working to strengthen police presence beyond urban centres by upgrading police stations, outposts and border outposts, including in interior and sensitive areas.On challenges faced by police personnel in sensitive situations, Sangma commended the force for professionalism, discipline and restraint. Referring to recent tensions in Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills, he said police played a key role in maintaining peace while the government continued dialogue with stakeholders and counterparts in Assam on the interstate boundary issue.“I would like to congratulate our DGP, Idashisha Nongrang, and her entire team for their dedication, leadership, and commitment in ensuring that law and order is maintained across the state,” the CM spelt out.
