Showers for Boston, heavy rain up north

Date:

Thursday morning will see widespread scattered showers across Massachusetts and the rest of Southern New England during the commute into work. The precipitation will begin to taper off by mid- to late morning, while the bulk of Thursday’s rain is falling over Maine.

But keep in mind, this storm will rotate a few scattered backside showers across the region through the afternoon and evening, so Boston could still see a spot sprinkle or shower Thursday evening. Best to bring along an umbrella if you have any outdoor plans, just in case. But generally, Thursday afternoon and evening should be dry across Southern New England.

Temperatures will be similar to Wednesday, mainly in the 50s.

A secondary low will form by Thursday evening, which will reinforce a few potent showers across Maine during the evening as Boston and most of Southern New England mostly dries out — as I mentioned above, a few spot showers could rotate back into Southern New England in the afternoon and evening.

Rain totals should hold to well under a half-inch in Boston and the rest of Mass. and Rhode Island. The heaviest rain will likely be across portions of New Hampshire and most of Maine, with rain totals between 1 and 3 inches across the Pine Tree State.

The good news is that this will be a very beneficial rainfall for folks up north without the worry of flash flooding. I took a look at the flash flood guidance, and much of the region would need to see 2.5 inches of rain or more over a six-hour window to result in flash flooding. Thankfully, for those areas that do reach 2 inches or higher, that’ll happen over triple the amount of time — safe to say the thirsty soils from prolonged drought will be happy with this rain.

The Northeast has experienced some level of dry and drought conditions since mid-2024. So any rain without the chance for flooding is certainly welcome.

Temperatures: 50s along the coast, warmer inland

In terms of temperatures, there’s not going to be a whole lot of change across the region. The immediate coast will remain cooler than the interior, with highs reaching the low to mid-50s. With cloud cover and scattered showers lingering during the day, highs west of I-495 will likely remain below 60 degrees.

Maine will be the coolest region on Wednesday, naturally, by experiencing the heavier rainfall along with cooler air funneling into the low from Eastern Canada.

Highs across all of New England on Thursday should range from the upper 40s to around 60.Boston
